Fisherman Walking
February 13, 2006
A lone fisherman walks along the beach at Sandy Bay, on his way from Pigeon Point. This stretch of beach on Tobago's southwest coast has been the focal point of a decades-long silent battle between local fishermen plying their indigenous trade and the corporate and foreign interests pumping money into the burgeoning tourism industry.
Already, the reef that sustains both industries has been severely damaged, but while tourism money continues to flow, the fishermen have been marginalised, forced to deal with restricted access to fishing areas and dwindling fishing stocks.
Though efforts by the Tobago government are currently underway to reclaim what has been lost, and protect the livelihood of the locals the question must be whether it is already too late.
