Torch Ginger

There are over 2500 species of flora in Trinidad and Tobago, some indigenous and many brought by migrants over the years. The torch ginger, Etlingera eliator, is believed to be native to the East Indies.

This striking specimen was growing at the Asa Wright Centre. The stalk was almost five feet high and the flower itself several inches across.
