Through The Lake

In the rainy season water collects in the cracks and crevices of the Pitch Lake, creating pools that are deep enough for swimming and bathing. During our visit we could see youngsters cavorting in the water, doing flips into the deeper pools.

The waters of the lake are rumoured to have mystical curative powers, possibly related to the high sulphur content. If you're suffering from ailments such as rheumatism, joint pain or arthritis maybe you should take a trip down to South Trinidad and give it a try. Though to be honest, the road there will probably do you much more harm than the waters can cure. The asphalt seepage causes serious instability and erosion of the surrounding land, which means the roads are in a perpetual state of disrepair.
