For over two hundred years sugar has been a mainstay of Trinidad's economy, and a central point in the development of the island's history and culture. Although the first sugar estate and factory was established in North Trinidad (in 1787 by Mr Picot de Lapeyrouse), the focus soon shifted to the rich flood plain of the Caroni River in Central Trinidad.

This panoramic image of five photos stitched together shows the verdant fields of Caroni, bounded by the Northern Range in the background. The road to the left is the Old Southern Main Road, which runs from Curepe through the old villages including Cunupia and Enterprise. On the right, the Trantrill Road is a newer link road built to alleviate some of the traffic congestion. It meets the Churchill Roosevelt Highway in St. Augustine close to the University of the West Indies.
